🌿 Back to the Ground Initiative - Decorah, Iowa
BTG is working to bring natural burial back to the state, creating opportunities for families to choose simplicity, conservation, and connection to the land. As Iowa’s first nonprofit dedicated to this cause, their vision is to establish natural burial grounds that protect ecosystems while honoring life’s end with dignity.
Iowa law allows for natural burial, but access has been limited. Back to the Ground is building awareness, offering education, and partnering with communities to develop green and conservation cemeteries across the state.
Other options:
1. Ask About Hybrid Cemeteries
Even if a cemetery in Iowa doesn’t advertise green burial, state law does not require embalming or vaults. You can ask a local cemetery if they’d be willing to designate a “green section” or allow burial without embalming, vaults, or metal caskets. This is how many hybrid cemeteries get started.
2. Work With Funeral Directors
Connect with a funeral director who is open to natural practices. Some will support families in skipping embalming and choosing biodegradable containers or shrouds. If one funeral home resists, ask another, it’s about finding someone aligned with your wishes.
3. Start With the Land
If you or someone you know has land and a vision, Iowa law does allow for private family cemeteries (with some county-level zoning restrictions). A small, private, or nonprofit conservation cemetery could grow from there. It starts with zoning approval and setting aside land permanently for burial.
4. Build Community Support
Many green cemeteries around the U.S. began because one or two determined people gathered local allies, land trusts, conservation groups, faith communities, or even other families who wanted the same thing. Together, you can present the idea to town or county officials.
If you want information on how to start your own natural burial cemetery, or you want to make me aware of another green, natural, or hybrid cemetery in this state, please reach out!
