Idaho does not yet have an active green burial cemetery. Families here who want a natural burial currently need to look to neighboring states, Washington and Oregon, where green and conservation burial sites are established and available.
🌿 Nearby Choices
- Washington offers several Green cemeteries and hybrid options, where families can choose simple, eco-conscious burials without vaults, embalming, or metal caskets.
 - Oregon also has multiple green and conservation burial grounds, especially near Portland and in rural conservation areas. Families in western Idaho often find Oregon to be the closest option.

🌿
Creating a Green Burial Option in Idaho
Even though none exist yet, Idaho law does not prohibit green burial. Starting one, or converting a section of an existing cemetery into a hybrid, requires several steps:
- Zoning and Cemetery Law: Review county zoning codes and cemetery statutes to determine where burial grounds are permitted.
 - Hybrid or Dedicated: Decide if you’ll designate a section within an existing cemetery (hybrid) or establish a full natural or conservation burial preserve.
 - Environmental Standards: Best practices include graves at least three and a half feet deep, no vaults, no embalming, and only biodegradable shrouds or caskets. Sites should maintain safe distances from water sources and use native vegetation for restoration.
 - Partnerships: Work with funeral directors, land trusts, conservation groups, or faith communities to build support. In some cases, perpetual care funds or conservation easements help secure the land for long-term protection.
 - Certification: For credibility, seek certification through the Green Burial Council once the cemetery or section is operational.

🌿
The Path Forward
For now, Idahoans must cross state lines for green burial. But with rising awareness, Idaho has the opportunity to create its first natural or hybrid site, one that could reflect the state’s wide-open landscapes and values of land stewardship.
