Florida
From the moss-draped oaks of the panhandle to the coastal hammocks of the south, Florida’s natural beauty makes it a perfect fit for the growing green-burial movement. Across the state, conservation cemeteries and hybrid grounds are offering families the chance to rest in harmony with the land, protecting ecosystems and honoring life’s natural cycle.
🌿 Heartwood Preserve Conservation Cemetery — Trinity, FL (Conservation Cemetery)
Just north of Tampa, Heartwood Preserve is Florida’s first conservation cemetery, protecting 41 acres of longleaf pine flatwoods and oak hammock. Each burial directly supports land restoration and wildlife conservation through partnership with the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Graves are hand-dug, vault-free, and marked with natural fieldstones that return gently to the landscape.
🌿 Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve — DeFuniak Springs, FL (Conservation Burial Ground)
On 350 acres of forest and meadow, Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve has been pioneering natural burial since the early 2000s. Family-run and nonprofit, Glendale offers both full-body and cremated remains burials, each helping fund the long-term conservation of the land. Visitors describe it as a tranquil sanctuary where the pines whisper and the cycle of life continues uninterrupted.
🌿 Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery — Gainesville, FL (Conservation Cemetery)
Managed in partnership with the Alachua Conservation Trust, Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery (PCCC) is located within 1,200 acres of protected prairie and forest habitat. As one of the nation’s model conservation cemeteries, PCCC ensures every burial contributes to ecological restoration, reforesting native longleaf pines and preserving the watershed.
🌿 Hickory Preserve — Brooksville, FL
A new site in progress, Hickory Preserve will soon join Florida’s network of green-burial sanctuaries, offering natural burial in restored native habitat. As plans move forward, this project represents the next step in expanding access to conservation-minded options across the state.
✨ Florida’s Green Legacy
Florida leads the Southeast in conservation burial, proving that deathcare can heal the land. Each sanctuary, from the pine flatwoods of Trinity to the prairies of Gainesville, embodies a shared vision: to let our last footprint nurture life.
